This study aims to understand how intergenerational dialogue between parents and children has become problematized in the city of Yazd. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on Grounded Theory.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 single young individuals aged 18to35.Data analysis was conducted in three stages—open, axial, and selective coding—resulting in the extraction of 207 concepts, 24 subcategories, 12 main categories, and one core category. The core category of the study was conceptualized as “dialogue in a coma,” reflecting a profound disruption in both the function and meaning of dialogue within the family context and across generations. The findings indicate that the inability to engage in dialogue begins with insufficient communication skills and is further intensified within a context characterized by structural authoritarianism, pervasive taboos, suppression of voice, lack of understanding, not being heard, and the deepening of the generational gap. This condition leads to secrecy, deception, resistance, and the displacement of dialogue toward peers.Overall, the findings reveal that dialogue in Yazdi families has diverged from its primary function as a means of mutual understanding and has instead transformed into a domain marked by tension, silence, emotional distance, erosion of family interactions, and the weakening of family cohesion between parents and children.
